personal belongings behind. >> we cannot breathe back here. >> this video just coming in. red alert at the oakland airport. a passenger captures a scary moment on his cell phone. >> a flight forced to make an emergency evacuation because of smoke in the plane. >> i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama dates. carolyn johnson is off. >> look at this video shot moments ago by a passenger on board that delta jet. johnson says on his facebook posting that the plane's cabin filled with smoke and the flight attendants yelled at passengers to exit the plane. it was a chaos at this -- way -- chaotic scene. >> emergency crews were waiting on the ground and passengers were waiting to learn what happened. >> we will bring you any new

developments. we are running this on abc7 news bay area. to our other top story, heavy rain, strong winds and even thunder and lightning. we are tracking the storm. this is a live look from our exploratorium camera. it shows the storms lingering over san francisco. >> the rains made for a dangerous commute. this truck spun out and flipped in the north bay. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with live doppler 7hd. >> it has been an active scene on live dop -- doppler 7hd. we have areas of heavy rain coming downright now. i will close in on the spots. we'll take you down to street level. as you noticed, frye road and marshall road getting downpours right now. we did have heavier storms earlier around the east bay, but this is not as heavy around vine hill and martinez and as we pull away and down toward the south bay, we are

seeing moderate pockets of rain. lightning strikes earlier tonight between 7:30, so if you are sitting down to dinner you may have heard a clasp thunder or strikes until 9:30 p.m. and we had a a couple of streaks on mount ain't helena. the radar held up tracking the system. we do have a wind advisory until 1:00 a.m. watch out forth gusty winds. it is gusting to about 31 oakland, fairfield and we are watching this next storm. i will be back to let you know how this will be different from the storm coming through here. >> we could not be more desperate for the rain. it does bring problems with it. downed trees and power lines and car wrecks. leslie brinkley begins our live team coverage and she is in pacifica. leslie? >> that's right. this is the calm after the storm.

no flooding in pacifica. just a day and a whole night of california raining and the problems it caused. >> sheets of rain and a blast of wind took down power lines in this pacifica neighborhood. along the san mateo coast it was stormy skies and a stormy sea. >> checking out the waves. >> waves pounded the pier where these die hards calmly fished despite 50 mile an hour gusts. >> we had like almost like 20-foot waves over here. the pier is 35 feet high. >> the water was splashing over the side of the pier. >> the storm triggered the cancellation of 120 flights at sfo. many were short hall routes in california from palm springs to san luis obispo and monterey. gary small wood's flight was on time, but he had to kill eight hours at the airport waiting for a friend. >> it was an air canada flight out of toronto and it got

canceled and was rerouted through denver so still waiting. >> penny's flight was 45 minutes late out of washington, d.c. because of the storm in san francisco. she was stunned when passengers applauded the delay. >> i am the only one from -- everyone from california cheered. we are pleased it is raining. >> raining for now. leslie brinkley, abc7 news. crews are cleaning up after trees fell on to the roads before 9:00. crews are working to clear the road and get the power back on. >> and road crews are busy along highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains as well where drivers dealt with the slick roads and the poor visibility. they were warned. you can see the illuminated signs out. >> closer to the coast the storm is bringing rough waves and strong winds. still some braved the weather and there was some rough surf

and 10-foot waves. >> the weather is causing problems in monterey county the affected beaches are listed on your screen there. runoff from the storm has caused contaminated water to find its way into the ocean. tests found high level of fecal chloroform and could make people sick. >> abc7 news reporter alan wang scouted highway 1 and shows us the storm's impact. >> a lot of water in the road way. cars are driving too fast at times. >> he took in a spray of tonight's storm after being pelted in the face by the wind-driven rain. he was working this overturned pick up accident on northbound highway 101 north of san rafael. it happened around 6:30. the driver was uninjured, but it backed up the drive home for several miles. >> he hit a puddle in the

roadway. that's what caused him to lose control. >> freddy alvarado was talking about hydroplaning around lucky drive. >> the rain goes that high, and if you don't take care of your car, you can get out of bounds and it is dangerous. >> hydroplaning appeared to be the cause of this one-car wreck off pepper road in petaluma around 3:30. no one was injured and it was only one of a few accidents in the north bay. despite the high winds and the driving rain, the chp says most drivers kept it safe. al --al length wong, a -- alan wang, abc7 news. let's go to tahoe to the heavenly resort where it is snowing. the area is under a winter weather advisory. 5 to up to 12 inches of snow is expected at higher elevations through tomorrow afternoon.

that snow means chain restrictions are in place heading to tahoe. here is a look from the cal trans cameras. the snow is sticking. >> abc7 news has another great weather resource for you. follow at live doppler 7hd on twitter for the latest bay area weather conditions. a man is facing attempted homicide charges after police say he deliberately rammed his car into a house in the south bay. it happened near westmont avenue in campbell. 27-year-old anthony mccherie was driving with a woman and two children when he crashed into the house. police believe he was trying to kill himself and his passengers. all four were taken to the hospital. he is also facing felony dui charges. a a $25,000 reward is being offered to catch the person leaving poisoned meatballs around san fransisco. animal control have found theater 5 meatballs in twin peeks and the outer richmond.

one dog became sick, but was treated quickly and is expected to be okay. a police chase caused major delays on bart. these photos of the crowds were posted on twitter. two armed robbery suspects got into the bart tins -- tunnels around 4:30. bart traffic was shutdown between 16th and 24th streets. police did not find the robbery suspects, but did arrest another person for possession of stolen property. a good samaritan took on an armed robber and it was caught on surveillance video at the am/pm mini mart. you can see him enter the store and pull his gun. he gets too close and the clerk grabs the weapon. that's when this guy, a 49-year-old customer stepped in and slammed the gunman to the ground. it was risky, but at least it worked in this case. that guy is in police custody. federal officials are demanding entry into a

international airport where a delta flight operated by sky west was evacuated after smoke filled the plane. the passengers were told to quickly evacuate. 75 passengers were on board and there were four crew members. no one was injured, so authorities were not able to determine so far anyway the source of that smoke. but we are on it.

jan brewer vetoed a bill that set off a national debate over gay rights and religion. brewer tweeted this image as she signed the veto. the controversial bill would have given businesses the right to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers. the governor said it would create more problems than it solved. >> i am not sure of one example in arizona where business owner's religious liberty has been violated. the bill is broadly worded and could result in unintended and negative consequences. >> earlier today opponents delivered ict 65,000 petition signatures calling for her scree toe and several major american companies including apple and yelp bad for business. we want to show you video of pop star justin bieber's arrest in florida. this is video from inside the south florida police station. you can see him swaying back and forth during a sobriety test. he was stopped for drag racing and tests reveal he had

marijuana and an anti-depressant in his system. he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and rezigs arrest. now to the story of the power of friendship. two young california boys and their unbreakable bond, one has a rare disease with no cure. his best friend just seven years old is on the case setting out to change the world. steve has the story. >> it is 3:00 a.m. in california and jonah has to be fed. >> it is an tang. -- it is an at wish on anybody. >> the precisely measured cornstarch every few hours through a tube in his stomach. >> this will be good for three hours while he is in school. >> jonas suffers from a rare liver disorder and it means he is always fighting dangerously low blood sugar. >> we hope we don't miss an alarm clock because he could die. his life is in our

hands. >> the one scientist who has been racing toward a cure almost ran out of funding, but help is coming from an unexpected place. jonah's best friend from preschool, 7-year-old dillon siegal says his friendship is as awesome as a chocolate bar and he wrote a book of the same name. >> i like to help my friend. that is the biggest chocolate bar. at $20 a copy it has turned into a sweet success and raising half a million dollars from new friends with big hearts in all 52 states and 48 countries. every cent goes to the florida lab where they truly believe they are getting close. >> it is now reality. it is not just a dream that these children can be cured. >> 10, 15 years from now where will you be? >> high school. >> high school and probably the disease would be cured.

we are taking you to street level. all roads are leading to tahoe. it is snowing at the higher elevations. winter weather advisory for the 6,000-foot elevation until 4:00 p.m. and expecting five to 12 inches of new snow. expect travel delays. rainfall totals and many of you are probably wondering these are the most up up-to-date i can get you. san francisco with just under an inch of rain. an inch and a half in santa rosa. 6600 san jose and 6500 in concord. we are looking at 4500 in livermore with more than two inches on mount saint helena. a beautiful view there and a lot of clouds are looking at the financial district. san francisco, oakland and san jose, 56, 55 in half moon bay. here is a look at our camera.

it is snowing above 8,000 feet. if you are thinking about holding up there hold off until sunday. 57 fairfield and in livermore. sfo camera, right now visibility is good, but toward the morning hours we could see delays. showers and isolated thunder still a possibility tonight. scattered showers for your morning drive. we are looking at wind yes, sir and colder storms thursday into friday. let's look at the pacific satellite picture. there is the storm that produced the rain and wind and the sloppy commute. the next storm is developing and it is colder tomorrow night. urban flooding and could see scattered power outages. we are looking at this storm continuing -- continuing into your pry -- friday. 9:00, 10:00 it is moving on shore. at midnight it will be stormy across the bay area. 5:00 a.m. on friday and still a stormy commute.

showers will linger through your friday evening and your friday get away and into the early part of saturday. the wind gusts will be stronger. they will pick up around 55 miles an hour. 51.reyes. you can see it is not just a coastal event. they will continue to pound us even at the lower elevations and the inland locations. additional rainfall will look like, this 2 to 4 inches in the mountains and 1 to 2 inches at the lower elevations. tomorrow morning scattered showers and breezy. the temperatures in the 50s. make sure you have your umbrellas. some showers are lingering to the north. 50s and 60s for your high's. chance of thunder appearing on friday. morning showers on saturday as you look at the forecast and then we will dry out for the rest of your weekend. still a slight chance of showers early to middle part of next week. >> thank you, sandhya. >> and don't forget to tune into the abc7 morning news. meteorologist mike niko and leila will be tracking the wet weather and your commute at
